Cardboard boxes and newspaper. The only conclusion I can come up with is that many cats and many dogs are born in cardboard boxes lined with newspaper and they remember the smell of each, and that is why cats and dogs seem to want to lay down on a newspaper while you are trying to read it or want to exoplore a cardboard box once it is empty.
