I just discovered the neurobiology website Beta Rhythm, which is so densely packed with information that it'll take me ages to pore over. The best post I've found yet is this one about sound.

The linked article from Scientific American hints at the complexity of sound perception by noting that musicians have a more complex music response in brain imaging than do non-musicians. In a similar way, perhaps audiophiles (on average) might have a more complex sound perception pattern than non-audiophiles, if for no other reason than they spend more time listening? I believe that the neural net between my ears has learned to hear many new aspects of not only music, but the effects of reproduction equipment on music, over the years. A new piece of equipment that sounds good initially may turn out to have serious limitations after listening for hours or days, or even months in one case within my experience. My neural net is trainable, with the result that equipment that was good enough a few years ago may not work for me now. The value of a review in Stereophile is that the reviewer has even more experience than I do, which may save an expensive mistake. I ask reviewers to be forthcoming and candid! Thanks.
