Jon Carroll: Still a Giant Among Writers

Posted Fri Aug 11, 2006, 11:33 AM ET

Today's Jon Carroll column doesn't exactly answer yesterday's link to Clay Risen's critique of Claire Hoffman's Joe Francis story (man, is this blog getting self-referential or what), but it does neatly expose Risen's glaring flaw: Journalism isn't just one thing.

Do I think Hunter Thompson, Gay Talese, and, yes, Claire Hoffman produce journalism, even though they don't disappear into an appearance of neutrality? Heck yes, and I value the heat they bring to their subjects.

Agreed, Wes. Being passionate and, yes, biased doesn't violate some unrealizeable Platonic definition of "journalism." To be a journalist, you must see something interesting (or nobody will care about what you write), report it, and be a good enough writer to entertain. You must include verbal counters that show your biases for what they are -- I believe this is the honesty and passion that distances some of the writers you mention from the run-of-the-mill hacks, who bore me to dreamland with their carefully crafted, sanitized "objectivity." Much of the above, incidentally, applies to audio journalism -- be biased, but entertain me with your bias and show a little excitement along the way.
